Reston

Reston was designed around the outdoors: more than 55 miles of paved pathways and natural trails thread the community together, connecting four man-made lakes — Anne, Thoreau, Audubon and Newport — and about 1,350 acres of protected open space, including 700 acres of forest. The W&OD Trail passes through too. It's genuinely possible to walk or bike from your neighborhood to a lakefront village center without crossing much traffic, which is exactly what founder Robert Simon intended.

Reston's community life runs on two hubs. Lake Anne Plaza — the original 1960s village center, now a historic district — hosts the popular Reston Farmers Market on weekends, plus quirky traditions like the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, with waterside dining year-round. Reston Town Center handles the big stuff: a free summer concert series, festivals, a holiday parade, and a pavilion that becomes an ice-skating rink each winter. Between the two, there's something on the calendar nearly every weekend.

Lake Fairfax Park in Reston is a 476-acre family playground: the Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole waterpark for summer, a 20-acre lake with boat rentals, a carousel, a large skate park and pump track, and even a well-reviewed campground — so the kids' first camping trip can happen ten minutes from home. Combine that with Reston's pools and pathways and winter skating at Town Center, and every season has an anchor activity.

Most Reston homes are members of the Reston Association, the community-wide association that maintains the pathways, some 15 pools, the four lakes, tennis and other courts, and 1,350 acres of open space, and administers design covenants. Its assessment generally covers those shared amenities and common-area care — some neighborhoods layer a cluster or condo association on top.
