The Friendly City is a diverse, growing college town (James Madison University) in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, with strong value and a lively food and arts culture.
The independent city is served by Harrisonburg City Public Schools, while the surrounding county belongs to the separate Rockingham County Public Schools — the city boundary decides which applies to a given home. Official data for schools in both divisions is on schoolquality.virginia.gov; confirm an exact address with the relevant division’s boundary lookup. James Madison University is also based in the city.

Farmers markets, breweries, hiking, and a walkable downtown.
Four true seasons in the Valley — warm summers and cold winters with regular snow, and crisp mountain air year-round.
Harrisonburg lives up to its Shenandoah Valley address. In town, Purcell Park offers 67 acres with a walking trail, ball fields, tennis and pickleball, and Hillandale Park is another local favorite for trails and picnics. Twenty minutes east, Massanutten Resort is a genuine four-season amenity on your doorstep — skiing in winter, an indoor/outdoor waterpark, and golf the rest of the year. With Skyline Drive and the surrounding mountains in easy day-trip range, this is one of the most outdoors-per-dollar-of-effort places in Virginia.
Downtown Harrisonburg has an easy, genuine community rhythm. The Harrisonburg Farmers Market — running since 1979 — operates year-round at the Turner Pavilion downtown, and in summer the same pavilion hosts the Sunset Market on third Thursdays with live music and food trucks, plus a weekly outdoor music series. The city's annual International Festival at Hillandale Park reflects how internationally diverse this college town really is. It's the kind of downtown where you start recognizing the vendors by name within a couple of months.
The anchor for young families here is the Explore More Discovery Museum in historic downtown Harrisonburg — a hands-on children's museum with 15 interactive exhibits, from a science lab and construction zone to a kid-run TV studio. Add Massanutten's indoor waterpark twenty minutes away for rainy-day energy burning, and playgrounds at Purcell and Hillandale Parks, and Harrisonburg covers the family-fun bases at small-city convenience — most of it minutes from wherever you'd live.
